There is a message about the beauty of persistence that I think is worthwhile to share. Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit, tour and learn about the work culture at Google, for which I am compelled to give a special thank you.
Additionally, an immense thank you goes out to the University of Toronto for curating this partnership and providing this opportunity!
I only learned about this opportunity almost a week after the application deadline, but I still did not shy away from submitting an application (and pestering Sooji Kim with almost daily phone calls and emails to follow up). It was not until the night before the event that I received the long-awaited email that I would be given the opportunity of a lifetime the following day.
The message here is to persist, persist, persist. Opportunities will not come to you if you do not make an effort to come to them first.
While at Google I met a lot of amazing people, including Akailah Wilson and Katy Hung, who have opened my eyes about working in a tech firm regardless of having a STEM background. There is lots of room outside of this realm available for students like myself who have a background in business, planning and policy making!
